hybridd: a portfolio website that lets the work speak
TwoFifths Design, a website and brand design studio in Edinburgh, designed and built the website for hybridd, a new Edinburgh consultancy creating commercial interiors. Led by directors Jordan McCaffery and Nick Hughes, hybridd covers interior architecture and design, space planning, workplace strategy, refurbishment and fit-out, alongside surveying, project management, cost consultancy and principal designer services. The brief was a simple Squarespace website that works as an online portfolio of their projects.
A portfolio, not a sales funnel
Most of hybridd's work comes through direct contacts, word of mouth and recommendation, so the site did not need to chase leads. Its job is to be the place a commercial property agent, asset manager or occupier lands after hearing the name, and to show the quality of the work within a few seconds. That shaped every decision: a handful of pages, a direct route to the projects, and nothing that gets in the way of the photography.
Sitemap first
As on every website we build, we agreed the sitemap before we talked about cost. It set out every page and the structure of each project page. Once hybridd signed it off, we set up a shared content folder that mirrored the sitemap page for page, with a short brief in each folder explaining exactly what we needed. hybridd wrote every word and supplied every image, so the voice on the site is entirely their own.
Less is more
The hybridd brand is white space, black type and a lowercase wordmark that finishes with a full stop. We built on Squarespace's Utica template, as hybridd requested, and customised it to carry that restraint across the whole site. The strapline, "creatively considered. commercially astute.", sits alone at the top of the homepage above full width photography, and the contact page closes on a monochrome map of Edinburgh.
A project template built to grow
The projects are the heart of the site. Each has its own page with a short narrative, the location and sector at a glance, and a full gallery of photography. We built one project template and every page follows it, which keeps the portfolio consistent and means hybridd can add new work themselves as projects complete. The original brief was for 15 projects. The site launched with 19, from Trip.com's award-winning Edinburgh office to projects for Skyscanner, FanDuel, Sustrans and Fios Genomics.
The result
hybridd now has a calm, confident portfolio that lets the work speak for itself, and a site the team can keep current on their own. hybridd.co.uk is live now.
